I own a Motorola T7400 "talkabout" walkie-talkie, and i need to know how i can change my frequency!?

I live in Sedro-Woolley WA. and i would like to change my frequency to more active frequency's because i have not yet been able to contact others except other walkie talkies i own.

PLZ/THXI own a Motorola T7400 "talkabout" walkie-talkie, and i need to know how i can change my frequency!?
The whole point of those type of Walkie Talkie, is to keep YOUR conversation private.. even if you do share the same frequency. (The channel is the frequency, the Code is the sub-channel)

The idea is, there are lots of code pairings, and many can be used without issue
and you set yours to the identical settings of any extra handset.

If you want a good old fashioned CB "open" walkie talkie or CB set, then you need to get exactly that.. OR

if you want to study and take the tests, a Amateur Radio Licence and call sign, and then a HAM radio set (others wont talk to you on that unless you are also licenced..)I own a Motorola T7400 "talkabout" walkie-talkie, and i need to know how i can change my frequency!?
It doesn't work that way. It is programmed for the FRS/GMRS frequency.

If you need to communicate on other frequencies, you first need to be entitled to them, then have a Motorola dealer program the rado for those frequencies.

Those other frequencies are probably licensed for public service angencies or commercial users, in which case they probably do not want chit-chatters.

If you want meet and talk to anyone on the radio, you have the wrong sort of rado altogether. You should look into an Amateur Radio license, so you can communicate on their bands and equipment, and where you can genuinely meet people and chat over radio.

  • Can police list in on walkie talkie conversations?

and how likely would it be for them to just happen to over hear a conversation? Can police list in on walkie talkie conversations?
It is extremely unlikely for a police officer to monitor walkie talkie channels (that is if they're GMRS/FRS radios). If you are using CB radios, the likelihood is much greater since that is what many speeding truckers use. For the most part, GMRS channels are widely unused and very light on traffic, thus it would be a waste of time to monitor them. I would estimate that the likelihood of an officer listening in on a conversation is about .000001%, if not less. However, if an individual is being targeted and is known to be using a walkie talkie, they most certainly would use one to see what they can hear. Many drug smugglers use handheld radios since they can't be tracked (as cell phones can), and they are useful in passing information over a radius of 5 mi.Can police list in on walkie talkie conversations?
Anyone with a scanner can hear those conversations.

They are not encoded or encrypted, so expect that nothing you say there will be private. Can police list in on walkie talkie conversations?
A walkie talkie conversation is an unclassified transmission, so it wouldn't be too hard for the police or anyone else for that matter

If i bought a walkie talkie from America with channel scan capability would it work in Australia?

No. The Channel Scan function basically just constantly loops through all of the channels on the radio (typically 15-22 for a consumer radio) until it finds one that is receiving a message. Since the channels on Australian radios typically use different frequencies than the channels on radios from the United States the scan function would not pick up Australian transmissions.

Do I need a license to use a walkie talkie?

Those radios transmit on many different services. Many are law enforcement, amateur, commercial, and other services...use of the radios could get you fined or imprisoned.

Private citizens are not authorized on most of the frequencies. All you could use it for is amateur radio, but you need a license. While FRS/GMRS operate in the range you mentioned, these radio are not type-accepted for use on those services.
i don't think you do need one you just need to make sure your not on the same frequency as the police, or you local taxi service. You may still need one if it was a CB radio.Do I need a license to use a walkie talkie?
just use them because otherwise they wouldnt sell you them like they dont sell you guns without proof of licesnse
If you are sure about the 400 - 480 MHZ frequency range, you probably will need a licence in the US. This frequency range covers the many bands that would require a licence such as the 70cm Ham band.

While it is legal to purchase these, and listen to the transmissions, to talk on them would require a licence for much of the frequency range 400-480 MHZ.Do I need a license to use a walkie talkie?
no well not in Canada but i'm not sure about the United States of America
Hmm well if you are in the UK, thats right in the middle of the tv bands!!
Judging by the frequency range, these sound like Amateur Radio walkie talkies. Yes, you need an FCC license to operate these.

You can go to the NARL website (http://www.narl.net/) and look up the license requirements. As a former "ham" radio license holder, I can tell you that you used to have to pass some pretty stringent exams showing knowledge of electronics to get this license; however, the "Morse code'" portion of this requirement has been (thankfully) dropped.

"walkie-talkie" is usually a hand held portable radio.

Walkie talkie was coined during WW2, but continues today.

    Step

    1

Tin canWash and dry two clean cheap tin cans. These are going to be the walkie talkies or telephones. Make a small hole in the center of each can making sure it has no sharp edges. It has to be large enough for the insertion of the string or cord, into each of the cans.

    Step

    2

tin cans with string on each canPush the string into each hole of the tin cans from the outside. Keep the string from slipping out by making a few knots in the ends. This will keep the string from slipping out of the cans when each person pulls their ''telephone'' or cellphone taut while you call someone and talk into it.

    Step

    3

longer strings allow for a longer distanceTalk into the can to the person in another room or in another area. The longer the cord, you can be a long distance from someone you want to talk to. Pull the string tight as you talk into the can. You will be able to hear and speak to each other. This 'Walkie Talkie', was also called a telephone and used by children communicating with each other and having fun speaking to their friends.

http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/鈥?/a>What is the channel frequencies for a normal 22 channel motorola walkie talkie?
It sounds like you have a radio with a mixture of FRS and GMRS frequencies. The site below should help. I would guess the FRS frequencies are in the first 14 channels but don't know for sure. The GMRS frequencies are probably the ones listed as simplex.

The 'sub c' stands for a tone coded squelch frequency. The second site below lists the tones. To communicate, the radios need to have no 'sub c' or they all have to have the same 'sub c'. The 'sub c' prevents you from hearing other conversations that are using a different code.

    Good luck.

I hear other conversations. I'll be saying something and I hear this guy talking about something else. How does this happen? Why do I hear other people's conversations on my amp and walkie talkie?
You are using the same radio frequency as the other person. If you are using a coded squelch then both of you have happened to choose the same squelch code. In that case you can just change your code.

  • Are there any apps to turn a smartphone into a walkie-talkie or shortwave radio emmiter?

I realize that this question might be rather stupid, since I understand nothing about the inner workings of phones and radios. Still, I was wondering if an app existed that could turn a smartphone into an emergency radio, for instance if you are lost outside of network range or if the network itself fails due to some disaster. I have an Android phone, kind you, but the question was more theoretical in nature. I am simply curious. Are there any apps to turn a smartphone into a walkie-talkie or shortwave radio emmiter?
no, there is not, cellphones are made to transmit on a fixed frequency for the service (usually 800/1900 GSM) if you want to be able to transmit you'd have to modify the inside of the phone plus reprogram it to work like a radio. It would take you a lot of time and maybe money.

If you want a radio thought you get CB radios, which don't cost much or frs/gmrs walkie talkies (less effective though)

If you want to use shortwave other than CB or GMRS getting a HAM radio license is something good to look into and not to hard either. With a Ham radio you can talk all over most the US easy.

What would happen if you connected a satellite dish to a walkie talkie?

would you get better signal? how do you do it?What would happen if you connected a satellite dish to a walkie talkie?
If done correctly you could increase the range of the walkie talkies by a massive amount - like 15 miles.

You would need 2 dishes, one for each walkie talkie. They would both need to be mounted and aimed directly at each other with no obstacles in between them.

This same basic technique has been used in various forms for a long time in radio communications, and more recently in wifi.

google for the word "cantenna" which is a cheaper and highly effective method too. What would happen if you connected a satellite dish to a walkie talkie?
What would happen if you connected a Ford logo onto a Chevy? About the same thing as if you didn't. Same for your question. Trying to hook a satellite dish to your walkie talkie won't do jack for it.

The signals used by walkie talkies won't be picked up by a dish. And the signals that could be picked up by a dish would be totally worthless to a walkie talkie.

I want to know because I want to know what im buying.Whats the difference between a Walkie Talkie and a 2 Way Radio ?
Walkie Talkies are 2 way radios.

The main difference is that when folks talk about them, walkie talkie is just a generic or slang term for hand portable two way radios.

The term also normally implies non professional, licence free, consumer grade or "toy" equipment.

When people refer to "two way radios" they are generally talking about professional licenced equipment.

It get's a little confused during conversation as the terminology is used by different people in different ways.

Nick.Whats the difference between a Walkie Talkie and a 2 Way Radio ?
A walkie talkie was usually a hand held CB radio. A two way radio was of higher quality and used much higher frequencies.

  • Question regarding Walkie Talkie/ portable radio jacks, HOW EXCITING?

Hello, it would be a wonderful help if anyone could provide me with information relating too the jacks that are common on walkie talkies i think, its a 3.5mm audio plug and a 2.5mm one side by side, What do they each do? I have an old throat mic and was wanting to fiddle around with it, thanks very much

Kylenstevo,Question regarding Walkie Talkie/ portable radio jacks, HOW EXCITING?
Actually, the general two-way radio standard is that the 2.5mm is the microphone and the 3.5mm is for the speaker. Both are mono connections. For PTT (push-to-talk) you put 2.2k惟 from the 2.5mm TIP to ground (2.5mm ring). So, in order to use your throat mic, wire it up with a 2.5mm mono plug. For PTT, rig up a momentary SPST switch with one lead going to ground of the 2.5mm plug and the other switch lead going to the tip via a 2.2k惟 resistor. That'll key up the radio for you remotely. Some radios will let you use the PTT on the radio while having a mic plugged into the jack, some won't. It depends on the radio so best to wire a remote PTT when using the speaker/mic jack to be safe. Also, in Kenwood radios, the 2.5mm and 3.5mm jacks are reversed from the standard. Most that have a 2.5mm and 3.5mm jack are as I have already mentioned.Question regarding Walkie Talkie/ portable radio jacks, HOW EXCITING?
There are the connectors for Speaker, mic and push to talk button for the handset!3.5 is for SP/MIC and the small one is for push to talk button.

Use Vaseline.. the same ones you would use for lips, hands.. cuts and burns. Vaseline provides the petroleum jelly that can help get the acid off. Just apply a little bit, scub with an old toothbrush then wipe it off. For future reference, apply Vaseline on your batteries before you put them in.. and yes, it will be safe to do that. That way, you won't have to worry about the acid caking on and it will also be easier for you to get the batteries out.. years from now. If that is the case.

What kind of walkie talkie goes the furthest?

It seems like there are so many kinds out there. Does the 'watts' have something to do with range? What kind of walkie talkie goes the furthest?
There are many factors that can cause certain walkie talkies to go farther than others, and in some cases a 5 milliwatt radio can go the same distance as a 5 watt radio. There are actually two types of walkie talkies; there is the FRS (family radio service) which is 5 milliwatt, and the GMRS (general mobile radio service) that can go anywhere from 5 watts to 100 watts (although all handhelds are 5 watts). So your best bet would be to find a FRS/GMRS capable radio that many companies like Midland, Cobra, Motorola etc make. And yes, wattage does play a huge role in distance, but there is also another factor to consider.

I've noticed that many people get so worked up over how many watts their radio has, but they are missing a crucial point. The antenna size is probably THE most important factor in transmission distance. To put it in perspective, a 5 watt GMRS radio with a 5 in antenna can go about 4-5 miles in very MILD terrain (trees, hills etc), while a 4 watt CB radio with a 5 ft antenna can go for about 40 miles in the same terrain. Now it is obvious that you can't find a GMRS radio antenna with anything over a foot, but some are slightly larger than others. To narrow it down, the best radios would be split between Uniden, Cobra, Midland, and Motorola's "top of the line" (aka the most expensive) radios. My personal experience would favor either Cobra's CXR925 or Midland's GXT1050VP4. Motorola also makes excellent radios, but I'm just not a big fan of their line only for petty reasons. On a side note, NEVER buy the radios from the manufacturer. Always buy them from places like eBay since you can easily get $20 off on the exact same radio, brand new.

In the first place, those so called 18 mile range walkitalkies are only 5 watts power INPUT to the finals. They are only 800 milliwatt in the FRS mode. They are the cheeeeep ones selling for around $ 20 and operate on the GMRS/FRS frequencies in the FM mode. What is even worse, you can't even leagaly use them on the higher power GMRS channels without the proper FCC license. Last but not least, that 18 mile range, under the best of line of sight cases, only seems to work over water. You night be better off to get a pair of CB radios. Is it an accident or on purpose? A scanner could pick up a Walkie Talkie and the speaker output could feed the PA system. Fire houses do that all the time, it's just a different radio system.

Accidentally, it could be radio interference where the antenna or a long wire picks up the radiation from the Walkie Talkie. How could a walkie talkie get broad-casted over an announcement system?

What do you mean by a long way. A hand-held radio will only work for a few miles. A vehicle mounted radio may go for 50 miles. It depends on frequency and transmit power. To cover a really long distance you will need a radio that goes through a repeater. There are commercial systems that provide this type of service. You should be able to rent the radios and pay for the service on a monthly basis. Check with 2-way radio dealers in your area or in the area you will be vacationing at.

Don't really know. I know the technology for a video-phone has been around for maybe over 30 years but it was never produced because women didn't want to be caught at night without looking "decent". The consumers decide what products are made. You could probably rig something up to a wireless network and improvise but i'm fairly certain it won't be the same as "video walkie talkies". Also, I think VOIP offers some form of video phone service but again...it's no video walkie talkie. Sorry I couldn't help much.

they have things like it, such as the Nokia N810, but its not so much just a walkie talkie, and it doesnt have quite the same features, or anything like that. and they are very expensive. there are some others, but they are generally of poor quality
It's a nice idea in the cartoons, but realistically, the bandwidth required defeats the concept. While an FM radio station takes up 200 KHz in bandwidth, and TV audio is just FM radio, the video portion takes up another 4.5 MHz, more than 20 times as much as the audio alone.

Walkie talkie channels just aren't wide enough to accommodate video, too.Remember the walkie talkie that penny used in the inspector gadget cartoons?

  • If I am on the other side of a hill or non-line-of-sight with a walkie-talkie, can I communicate at all?

Will it be absolutely impossible to talk with the walkie-talkie even from a short distance if there is no line of sight? If not, how much will a non-line-of-sight communication affect the quality and distance? If I am on the other side of a hill or non-line-of-sight with a walkie-talkie, can I communicate at all?
%26gt;Apparently mobile phones require a line-of-sight as well. I can use my mobile phone inside my house, yet there is no line of sight. How does this work?

Line of sight for radio waves is not the same as for light! Radio waves can go through a lot of stuff that light can't go through. But they can't go through a pile of dirt %26amp; rocks! Mobile phones use a lot shorter wave lengths than typical walkie-talkies, so their signals can leak through smaller openings.

Also a cell phone only has to connect with one cell phone tower, so the phone can have multiple elevated transceivers to pick from.

%26gt;how much will a non-line-of-sight communication affect the quality and distance?

Line of sight is sort of an over simplification. Mobile phone/walkie-talkie/TV/radio waves can also get from one place to another by reflection and diffraction. Look at the first link below for examples of diffraction of TV signals.

But while line of sight is a pretty sure thing, reflection %26amp; diffraction are not a very sure things. You just have to try it and see if it works at all!

If you have an amateur radio license, there is also a solution called a "repeater". See last link.If I am on the other side of a hill or non-line-of-sight with a walkie-talkie, can I communicate at all?
A walkie talkie , can, depending on the distance to talk from point a to point be, as long as this is not a huge hill and you , depending on the power of the units, are within range. I had a good pair of walkie talkies when I was a teenager and could talk probably 6 or 7 miles away from one anotherIf I am on the other side of a hill or non-line-of-sight with a walkie-talkie, can I communicate at all?
With a walkie talkie it depends on the output. Phones communicate by relay from a tower, on a very differen frequency which is digital as well. These things all make a difference.

I find it really annoying when businesses are using FRS radios to conduct thier work since this was intended for private citizens to use, not busesses. Besides, in some areas there's quite a bit of traffic and you can have significant interference from other users on the same channels.

I agree with John in that you should use professional equipment. There's 2 methods that can be used:

    1. Licenses frequency: this is the "old fashioned" approach. You get a license to use a specific frequency for your area, nobody else can use it. You have radios setup for that frequency. This can turn out very expensive since licensing is not cheap. Usually only suitable these days for very large operations.

    2. You subscribe to leased radio services from a provider. These are sometimes setup by cellphone companies and others. You have radios that are programmed to use "trunked" frequencies that are shared by other subscribers. You only ever hear and talk to your own radios, however this avoids expensive licensing costs and is a better way to use the radio spectrum.

Check out your yellow pages under business radio and you should find services in this area. Most of the radios being used for either scenario I described are light-years ahead of the consumer goods you find in Radio Shack and similar in terms of durability and performance. What kind of walkie talkie do i get for business use?

  • How can a walkie talkie interfere with a speaker signal to immedatly restart a computer?

I use a Motorola Radius CP200 daily at work, when i sit down and push and hold the talk button near the speakers of my computer, the computer immediatly shutsdown and restarts causeing unknown errors inthe system logs. How is this Possible and what possible solutions are there? How can a walkie talkie interfere with a speaker signal to immedatly restart a computer?
Your speaker wires are acting like an antenna, and the RF energy is probably entering the computer and causing some problem with the electronics, causing the crash.

This can be caused by haviing the antenna too close to the computer, poor cable (poor shielding), poor grounding, and even poor computer or speaker design (makes them more susceptible to RF interference). It is not necessarily the radio's "fault", but it could be your computer equipment that is over-reacting to a little bit of RF somehow getting into it...

Remember, computers generate a lot of RF interference themselves, you can hear it over any AM radio close to the computer. Anything that generates RF, can also receive it (or react to it...)

Seperate the two devices, shorten the speaker wires, move the computer farther away from the antenna. You are using an outdoor antenna I hope... If it's inside, you are doomed to this interference almost no matter what.... If this is a handheld, you can only operate the radio away from the computer. I can cause almost any computer to crash with a handheld and 5W of power, if I move it around the computer, depending on frequency/band...How can a walkie talkie interfere with a speaker signal to immedatly restart a computer?
It's called Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). When the transmitter in your walkie-talkie is close to your computer, the wires in the computer can act as receiver antennas, and feed radio energy into critical components.

In the most severe case I've seen, a monitor burned out.

If you're sure it's your speakers, try moving them somewhere else. A couple of feet might make all the difference.

Better quality shielded computer cables might help, as might shielding or relocating the system unit (tower). But this is going to be a trial-and-error process. A self-contained computer such as a laptop might be more resistant to interference: no external cables except the power cord.

To attack the problem from the other end: use a plug-in headset / boom mic on your walkie-talkie when you're seated at your computer, and sit the walkie-talkie itself somewhere else. (Your belt holster might be far enough away.)

I hope this helps. Good luck. How can a walkie talkie interfere with a speaker signal to immedatly restart a computer?
when you use the radio, it creates a large electromagnetic radiation field which can force electrons to move in your computer. i would suspect that it is moving the electrons in the reset switch cable enough to make the system think that it has been depressed.

I use the same model at work and have never had that issue, but i have had it cause static on speakers, projectors to turn on, and fax machines to power cycle.

They have 8 PMR and 83 DCS channels - which are not compatible with any regular CB radios, including cobra.

i would keep that boost if i were u....not for the money cause nextel is cheaper is jus i like boost mobile's phonesWhich is cheaper Boost Mobile or Nextel if I only use the walkie-talkie feature?
NEXTELWhich is cheaper Boost Mobile or Nextel if I only use the walkie-talkie feature?
nextel is cheaper because you can get unlimited walkie talkie feature's but a boost you pay for everyone you make
Just cancel the Alltel, and re-start your nextel! Get the i880

  • Why does the police officer still carry around those big bulky walkie talkie?

I seen a few cops today %26amp; they were carrying huge 18 inch walkies. It's 2008 the age of technological advance then why dont they invent a walkie as small lightweight as a cell phone for the cops? Why does the police officer still carry around those big bulky walkie talkie?
They do have them. ...it's all up to the department to invest the money in buying new ones. Maybe that department is just broke. Trooper3316 makes some good points though. ...but I think I know what you're referring to. Some departments have out-dated equipment. As Trooper says, they are expensive to replace. Imagine a big city that employs 5000 police officers.... multiply that by the cost per raidio and you have millions of dollars to buy new ones. Why does the police officer still carry around those big bulky walkie talkie?
Besides cost, reliability, range and battery life we have also found that the smaller radios are to easy, especially for soft clothes officers, to lose.

Most of the police radios are the same power and depend on repeaters, either fixed in cities or in the cars in rural areas. Almost all are FM so there is no bouncing off the ionosphere (way to un reliable for the police)

My department started switching to the latest Motorolas a while back. they were small but the batteries would not even last a shift. very bad news when there is problem and everyone is out busting their humps trying to keep the peace.

We went back tot the HT and Radius series. Bigger, heavier, just as flexible and a much longer battery time. Why does the police officer still carry around those big bulky walkie talkie?
Size is a trade off, as the smaller sizes will not have as much power, or as much battery life. This could be important if you have a beat that is not near the station, and your battery needs to last your whole shift.

It could also be important in a larger city, where tall buildings reduce the effective range of your radio.

Budgeting for newer radios can be a problem too... our department is switching to Motorola MT 1000 radios, they cost about $5,800 each. After three years, about half of our 24 officers have them.
bigger batteries = more relyability during an emergancy

the radios are also designed to go through the entire city. if you go to smaller radios then you get a smaller range. i wouldnt want to rely my life on a 5 or 10 mile range radio

It means the RF frequency is wrong. If there is a band switch, try changing bands; otherwise you may have to take it to someone who can put it on the right frequency.

What frequencies or frequency do you want to be able to receive?

There are some scanners that is controlled by your computer. There are also a number of amateur (ham) radio receivers that are computer controlled. However if you plan to transmit with one of these you will need to get your license first.

My friend and I found her like ancient walkie talkies in her house from b4 we allowed to have cell phones, and we really want to use them. They worked perfectly in her house, but when i took one back to my house which is like only a mile away it wont work!! and the think says it works for 2 miles!!! does anyone kno how to make them work more effectively?Walkie Talkie?
Maybe it's the battery. It may be used up or it's just the quality. Try to get a good battery brand so it can work better. If it doesn't work then maybe it was just false advertisment.Walkie Talkie?
As I remember (oh , lord, lol) they only had the short range as allowed by he FCC at the time. Ten-4 good buddy.

    Walkie Talkie?

I need a pair of walkie talkies that has a range of 2 miles in the city (not on top of mountains or on flat land). There are a lot of trees in the area, but not too many tall buildings. Are there any walkie talkies that will go that far?Walkie Talkie?
ALL walkie talkies are limited in power by FCC rules.

Most run at the max allowed power.

quality of modulation, components, quieting, and engineering will determine how intelligible the signal is at 2 miles - not the power.

My choice is Motorola - try a T9500R about $60/pair.Walkie Talkie?
yes, you need the aid of a repeater. GMRS is an open service that allows repeater use and would give you the required coverage - provided there is a GMRS repeater in your area. If there is not, you can put one there.

A license is required from the FCC. The license costs $75.00 for 5 years.

You can also get what is called an Itinerant Business license, for this you should contact a local 2-way shop, and NOT Radio sHack as they have no clue.

In reality, a cell phone may be the cheapest way to communicate.Walkie Talkie?
GMRS with a repeater would work, but most are private, and finding equipment set up for the proper 'split' is not cheap or easy. Yep..Use a cell phone.

Do you need a plan to do this or can you just buy a Nextel phone with no plan or anything and just use the walkie talkie? Is using the walkie talkie on Nextel phones free?
The answer it's YES, you can buy a NEXTEL PHONE UNIT that has the Direct Talk feature available in the phone unit itself. You don't need NO PLANS from NEXTEL although you will a need a BLANK SIM to access the feature. Direct Talk only allows transmit ions up to 5 miles depending on many factors. If you want NATION or INTERNATIONAL coverage you need to sing up for a 25 DLLS a month Direct Talk Available for Businesses only, and not available for regular plans you would have to sign up for a 200 min Plan with DC. If you want INTERNATIONAL Access 10 Dlls+ it's REQUIRED. DO NOT GET BLACKBERRY 8350i, or anything FANCY mostly they don't have it, i335, i670 are prime examples for DIRECT TALK availabilityIs using the walkie talkie on Nextel phones free?

First, I have to ask you one Q.:

Are you a qualified %26amp; experienced electronics %26amp; radio communications engineer with a laboratory that is well-equipped with a range of expensive test equipment?

If the answer is no - then you do not have the knowledge nor equipment to investigate the possibilities of doing this: forget it.

If the answer is yes - then you wouldn't have asked that Q. in the first place!

So, the answer is: not practical nor possible for you to do this - sorry.

    .

.How to increase range of walkie-talkie?
If CB walkie talkies, their output is limited by law.

It takes huge power changes to effect small range changes.

Antenna improvements are the best way to boost range. But gain antennas negate the advantage of portability of a walkie talkie!

Forget it, use it as intended.

I know very little about walkie-talkies, but it must be a two-way. I will be using it at either 81.575 MHz FM or 169.3375 MHz FM, so it must be able to receive both of these frequencies. • How do you get a headset to work with a walkie talkie?

I have Cobra 2 way walkie talkies and I bought a Motorola earpiece with a mic and it doesn't work when i plug it in. Why doesn't it work? How do you get a headset to work with a walkie talkie?
    Ryan,

I work for Motorola, and I am guessing that the Cobra radios you are using have a different pin out on the lapel mic jack. The Motorola headset/lapel mic you bought, unless it states it directly on the package will most like not work with this radio and will only work with the Motorola branded radios. I have never used the Cobra radios, but have seem this issue before with other radios and the same circumstances. I would recommend you take the lapel mic back and get the one for the Cobra radio.

Yes it is against the law. Federal law, the FCC regulates the re-transmission of communications on frequencies where they are not specifically authorized. Is it illegal to air a police scanner over a walkie talkie?
it probably shouldn't be since both are legal to own and it is being sent over citizens' bandIs it illegal to air a police scanner over a walkie talkie?
It could be illegal under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. It provides exemptions enabling you to intercept electronic communications of police, etc. It specifically forbids disclosing what you intercept, and I don't see any exemptions for that. But have a look, maybe you'll see something I missed: http://floridalawfirm.com/privacy.html
No you can do what ever you want with it for the most part. It is public domain. We go into a secure mode when we are talking about sensitive things that you won't be able to get on your scanner anyways.

  • Does anyone know of a cell phone that has an "old school" walkie talkie feature?

I am not talking about the technology that is used for Nextel push to talk but just plain old peer to peer walkie talkie. My phone has a camera and mp3 player and I could see a need to be able to communicate via walkie talkie to other cars during road trips or to my wife while in different parts of a store without using cell minutes.Does anyone know of a cell phone that has an "old school" walkie talkie feature?
Most of Nextel's rate plans include unlimited walkie-talkie minutes, so you really don't need to worry about using walkie-talkie minutes. And, most plans also include free mobile-to-mobile cellular calls (between any Sprint and/or Nextel phone) for an additional $5 for Nextel phones. For Sprint phones, mobile-to-mobile is free, but you don't have the walkie-talkie feature (except on hybrid ic502 phone, which uses Sprint cellular and Nextel walkie-talkie).

But, to answer your question - some of the newer Nextel phones have a feature called "Direct Talk". Direct Talk is just like a regular off-the-shelf walkie-talkie - it doesn't use minutes. But, you have to switch to Direct Talk mode to use it, and you cannot receive cellular or Nextel Nationwide Walkie-Talkie calls while you are in Direct Talk mode. However, your phone calls will go to voicemail.

Nextel's web site states that Direct Talk only works with the i315, i325 or i325 IS, but it is also available on the i560, i580, i355, i670, i760, i850, i870 and i880.

And, the effective range is usually 1-2 miles in town, and 5-6 out in the country - as long as you aren't in the mountains. Direct Talks works really well.

See the link for more information - here is the Nextel explanation about Direct Talk.

Direct Talk is an all-digital off-network walkie-talkie service that works between compatible phones within a range of up to 6 miles. Terrain, weather, foliage and man-made structures (such as buildings), among other things, may impact range availability. Direct Talk operates on the 900 MHz ISM public frequency and provides group and private walkie-talkie capability. This valuable service is ideal for use in remote locations, as a back up for emergency situations, or when network coverage may not be available.Does anyone know of a cell phone that has an "old school" walkie talkie feature?
The closest thing to that is an FRS Radio which is basically a high tech walkie talkie. At best buy theres a pair that runs 19.99 but they run on 4 AA batteries each ones with chargers are around 49.99

Have any of you ever played with an FRS walkie-talkie and talked to other kids on them?

I'm 15 years old, and I was playing around with an FRS walkie talkie this weekend while fishing in a boat on a lake. I talked to a number of other kids ages 11 to 16, boys and girls. All strangers, of course, but it was fun! I was thinking that these would be the perfect alternative for kids who don't have cell phones or their parents refuse to pay their kids' bills for them. Since most kids go to public school, they would all live within talking range of each other.Have any of you ever played with an FRS walkie-talkie and talked to other kids on them?
Yeh i did once. They asked me if i had "the beer"

Is there a walkie talkie you can send words on?

I really need the name of one if there is. If not what is an inexpensive brand of walkie talkies that take batteries instead of being charged? Please and thankyou for any answers! :)Is there a walkie talkie you can send words on?
yes there is ---- its called a phone --- there is no need to produce something like that (they have never existed) when the phone will do all of that and moreIs there a walkie talkie you can send words on?
it would certainly be possible to make one, look at cell phones, but the regulations for license free toy type handies specifically prohibit digital signal modes. the reason for that is digital would enable encrypted communications. i assume that wifi devices are too expensive for your needs. Is there a walkie talkie you can send words on?

Walkie Talkie picks up static from other channels?

I have several Cobra microtalk radios and I've noticed recently that when they are tuned anywhere from 1 to 7 they pick up interference when any other channels in that range are used. You can talk on channel 8 while someone else uses 7 and be fine, but if you're on 1 you'll pick up static any time someone talks on 2 through 7. I'm contemplating buying new walkie talkies if this can't be fixed, but if it can be fixed I'd really rather save the money.Walkie Talkie picks up static from other channels?
" Bleed-over" happens when the other units are higher powered. COBRA used to be good in the CB days. Sorry i don't know about now!Walkie Talkie picks up static from other channels?

  • How do you turn a walkie talkie to a radio broadcaster?

ok just wondering how do you turn a walkie talkie to a radio broadcaster??

my brother has done it but wont show me how to do it help :)How do you turn a walkie talkie to a radio broadcaster?
Bob is correct. Walkies talkies (also known as two way radios) are meant to keep the communications between two people or specific groups of pepole. In fact, some two way radio users want to keep their conversations so discreet that they use earpieces like secret service members. How do you turn a walkie talkie to a radio broadcaster?
technically, it is illegal to broadcast on a walkie talkie. These channels are for two way communication, not one way broadcasts.

If someone were to file a complaint with the FCC, you could be fined up to $10,000 per day.

Try the Cardo systems Scala Rider I have one it is blue tooth compatible to work with your cell phone and many other devices I we love it I think it was around $200 and you can get it though your local bike shop or J%26amp;P catalog I am looking for a walkie talkie that will go inside of my fourwheeler helmets, does anyone know which one, an?
Have a look on e-bay or in your local bike shop's.

A cheep rider to pillion vox system with wires that get in the way can be bought for 拢5-10 upwards.

A good bike to bike set up with a good range and that is power'd by the bike and opperated by vox or a ptt button on the handle bars is going to be 拢100 upwards.

vox is ok but it can be a pain in the ear's it its realy windy, as it will key up and transmit when the DB gets to a preditermind level.

ptt is better but can be tricky to press/find the button with cold/wet gloved hands.

  • Walkie talkie how to restrict communication to only two units?

    Hi,

I have a set of G-223 midland walkie talkies. I want to use these to communicate with in the different floors/rooms of my house.

However I get lots of disturbance from outside signals. This is a distraction and sound pollution. With this disturbance I do not feel like using them. Is there a way to restrict communication ONLY between these two units? (and Nothing else).

Appreciate your inputsWalkie talkie how to restrict communication to only two units?
    I googled the brand and model number to find out what you are dealing with;

you have a set of conventional FRS/GMRS radios.

Some radios have "privacy codes" (CTCSS) that keep them from responding to

any signal that lacks a subaudible tone, but the Midland G-223 does not have

that feature, and will receive any transmission on the channel to which it is set.

The only workable remedy is to buy a set of radios that have the CTCSS feature.

What's the best long range walkie talkie watch please?

I'm going to Mexico and its a huge hotel.

It's a good way of keeping track of the kids if they

    go into kids club.

Normal walkie talkies get left in their bag but they can wear

a watch so I thought it sounds like a good idea.

If you have used a walkie talkie watch long distance

    me the brand.

I'm moving across the street from my parents, its their own house but it was getting a little crowded with others coming to live over. The house is exactly the one opposite us. Will a walkie talkie be appropriate?I'm moving across the street, should I get a walkie talkie or a landline?
Sure. That would be a great idea. Much cheaper than a landline unless you need to make real calls. Do you have a cell phone? If so, just use that.

The second is more just an auction list. I seldom use CB portables any more, the power is too low. I wonder about how accurate the power meter would be considering the interference you run into and if you are playing tracking games you might consider a dedicated small set with a loop antenna for direction finding.Where can I find a walkie talkie with a signal meter?

What are the legal channels one can use on a walkie talkie without the need of a lincense?

I'm going to be using regular walkie talkies where I work so I need to know which channels I can use without the need of a lincense? What are the legal channels one can use on a walkie talkie without the need of a lincense?
Most good walkie-talkies offer a choice of several usable channels, with no need for a license. What are the legal channels one can use on a walkie talkie without the need of a lincense?
Its mostly the wattage/output that makes the license needed. If you are not modifying the walkie talkies you should have no problems. What are the legal channels one can use on a walkie talkie without the need of a lincense?
Channels 7-14 on a FRS/GMRS walkie require no license.

Why is the range on my walkie talkie not what it's supposed to be?

I have 6 mile range walkie talkies and when I go a little more than a mile away i have crappy reception with the other talkie. Why is the range on my walkie talkie not what it's supposed to be?
Six miles is maximum range on flat, open ground with no obstructions on a fully charged battery. Anything that is between the two radios will cut down on range. Why is the range on my walkie talkie not what it's supposed to be?
Because they are tested on flat ground when there is ideal atmospheric conditions. Add terrain, trees, skip, etc, etc. and you lower the range incredibly. Never believe the packaging. Why is the range on my walkie talkie not what it's supposed to be?
The distance may be for a cleared area with no buildings or trees. Check the packaging if available.
