What was up with that basketball brawl between the knicks and the nuggets?

i think that the whole thing could have been avoided. I mean, it's not like that knicks player meant to come down on J.R. Smith like that, it was an accident! NEW YORK (AP) -- The NBA could wait until Monday before ruling on penalties resulting from the brawl between the Nuggets and Knicks.



All 10 players on the court, including league scoring leader Carmelo Anthony, were ejected after the melee Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. The mayhem began when New York's Mardy Collins flagrantly fouled the Nuggets' J.R. Smith with 1:15 left in Denver's 123-100 victory.

Anthony faces an automatic suspension for throwing a punch, and Smith and New York's Nate Robinson will be penalized for their fight that spilled into the stands.



With so much footage to review and players, coaches and officials to interview, the league probably will need time to make its ruling.



"We don't have timetable for when the decision will be reached," NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Sunday.



Still, it might well come Monday since both teams play that night. The league's policy has been to rule on any suspensions before the teams involved play their next game.



The Knicks host Utah on Monday; the Nuggets are home against Washington.



Anthony could receive one of the harshest penalties. He twice escalated actions, shoving Robinson in the neck and throwing a hard punch that dropped Collins just when things seemed to be calming down.



Last season, Orlando's Keyon Dooling was suspended five games without pay and Seattle's Ray Allen three for their fight, which also spilled into the crowd. Dooling threw a punch that did not connect.

you honestly thought that it was an accident that he wrapped his arms around a guys neck? you are pretty dumb. he clearly meant to do it. they were down by a ton of points, and jr smith just dunked the ball on the last series. he didnt want it to happen again, so he took him out. and basketball isnt even a physical sport anymore. they just complain until they get the call that they want

I think the whole 'What would you do if someone hit your friend like that? Hit him back' thing is bull. First off Smith is a new player, they can't be that close. And hard, dirty fouls like this and even worse happen all the time in the NBA but you don't see the players throwing a schoolyard, thug-act hissy fit. No these were a bunch whiny players who acted like children and it was a pretty stupid sight if you ask me. Smith shouldn't have gotten in Collins face like that, even if what he did was dirty, and Robinson wouldn't have jumped in and escalted things and I have no idea what the hell C-Anthony was thinking. Just when I finally was able to muster up some respect for the guy for the way he's been playing and his charity work he goes and does crap like this. He should have been an example but he had to get involved and acted just as childish as pretty much everyone else.



I also think the 'Wa-wa, they had their starters in the game' argument is bull too. Who cares? If Karl wants to be a jerk and leave the players in the game to embarrass them (which he obviously was knowingly doing), and idiotically risk injury to his star players in a game that's won-and-done, then fine. But if New York doesn't like it and are getting sick of being embarrassed, maybe they should try and compete every once in a while. They have no one to blame but themselves and can look at no one else but themselves.



Grow up guys.



And that's all I have to say about that.
It was terrible, a bunch of grown men acting that way. And all over a "lack of respect." Oh please.

these brawls in professional sports is getting out of hand. what good comes out of it? i guess they forget that they're not on the streets anymore and that they're making millions of dollars playing ball but that's not enough of a reason to make them stop and think before they act. their street instincts just kick in and they just start swinging. it's just dumb.
