I am in the market for an entry level SLR and had made up my mind with the Nikon D80 though warranties are specific to the country of purchase. I am a Canadian living in South korea. I've contacted Nikon Canada and they informed me that they would not service any camera purchased outside of Canada and claim that these measures are put in to place to discourage individuals from purchasing their products on they gray market. Needles to say this really turned me off from Nikon and am curious to know if Canon, Sony, Lumix or other competitors provide better services. If anyone has information regarding warranties I would love to hear from you.

Since "gray market" cameras result in a loss of revenue to the camera manufacturer, and part of that revenue is used to pay for service centers, refusing to service them is a common practice.
Its common for a camera to have several different names - a different one for each geographical area of the world. In the USA, you'd buy the Canon Rebel Digital; in Japan, the Canon KISS Digital and elsewhere the Canon EOS 300D. Same camera, different designations to help control the "gray market".
Some camera manufacturers offer an international warranty so you might want to check that. The camera will have to be bought from an authorized importer and the international warranty may cost more.Interested in buying an SLR camera but am having doubts because of warranties.?
Check out buying a camera in Canada, and having it shipped to you in South Korea, you can register the warranty in Canada, and if it needs service, you can ship it to the service center in Canada. Or, buy one from a company like http://adorama.com or http://bhphotovideo.com and buy their "additional" store warranty, which lasts longer and covers more than the Canon warranty.Interested in buying an SLR camera but am having doubts because of warranties.?
I have two points for you.
First, I use Olympus and my warranty is world wide service. I just need to contact them first at a provided number.
Second, I recently bought my second DSLR and I had no problems with my first DSLR for the 4 years I had. I doubt seriously you will ever need the warranty. You are living in S. Korea now, when do you plan to move back? A few months will tell a lot about the camera.
I am not trying to sway you away from your choice. I just don't think you will need the warranty. DSLR's tend to be made that good.
