Why do Americans buy crappy cars?

Look at all the crappy cars that have flooded the U.S. car market. Grey Toyota Corollas and Camry's fit for heart patients that shouldn't get too excited. Automatic this, front wheel drive that. Gas engine galore with not a single diesel to be had. There is NOTHING being sold right now that is fun to drive, economical and practical. The 3 most important traits for European cars.

Americans buy gas guzzlers that offer no stick shift, RWD, or turbo diesel where necessary. The majority of which have major over-steer, front end weight bias (worst kind), crummy automatics, and large displacement gas engines.

People vote with their dollars too you know. So what happens is, the rest of us who are educated and who know a good car when they see one are stuck with garbage. While all the Europeans get the cream of the crop!!! America has crappy cars and it's her own fault...

Don't you agree that America has it all wrong? We should have Turbo Diesel, RWD, and Stick. Why do Americans buy crappy cars?
The biggest issue with the American market over the European market, is that in most places in the US...you NEED a car.

People in the US will buy the car that seems the most practical to them in most cases, because they have to have it. In Europe, you don't NEED a car like you do here, so they have to go above and beyond to get sales.

American auto companies are waking up to the fact that they will be destroyed by foreign companies if they don't start making quality, efficient vehicles. But thats really the biggest factor here.

Most Americans want a car for basic purposes, getting from point A to B. They aren't looking at 0-60 and slalom times.
Chevy!!!

Not the new crappy little ones though....Why do Americans buy crappy cars?
A lot of people, especially young people, can't drive stick. You'd better get used to not getting manuals, because they're dying. With the spread of DSGs and the improvement of CVTs, I doubt there will be many available at all 20 or 30 years from now.

But hey, maybe as DSGs get cheaper, they'll kill autos. It could happen.

The lack of RWD is due to a couple of things:

It's cheaper to build, and therefore cheaper to buy

It can be made more fuel efficient.

And, most importantly, because people don't know **** about that, people think RWD is dangerous in bad weather. Basically, it's because people don't know how to drive, and exaggerate the danger this poses. (But only as applies to RWD, not to...you know, actually driving like morons).

The lack of diesel is due to:

US environmental regulations, particularly in states with strict emissions requirements.

Americans hear "diesel" and they think trucks, buses, and the terrible diesels of the 1970s and 1980s. Particularly the shitty GM diesels.
I have a diesel. A Super Duty, and wouldn't have anything else.

Seriously, my sister's Jetta diesel gets 50mpg, why the hell aren't other car companies even trying for this? F@ck hybrids! Prius' ain't got SH!T on a VW diesel! Why do Americans buy crappy cars?
we have RWD... most american muscle cars have rwd, my camaro has rwd, and stick shift, so :P
they dont buy turbo diesel because diesel stinks,, more harmful to the environment and most importantly it's not necessary to buy a car for racing fun but they more likely buy cars for transportation purposes

they dont buy RWD because though i know it probably gives more fun to drive professionally, but like i earlier said most americans buy cars for convenience.. to move more freely using less physical energy instead of walking all the way to work and home.. this is also one of the reasons of high obese rate in america

they dont buy stick because it's more complicated and more inconvenient than automatic transmission even if the stick gives more excitement that you expect from a car. most americans dont care much about that kinda fun.. but the primary role of an automobile they believe is a tool for transportation.

but the important thing is, there r people like you who think purchasing vehicles should have more to do with the fun or performance like racing cars. So they still can choose that kinda cars instead of convenience-oriented automatic FWD gasoline cars.. So it's their own choice whether they go for the kind of excitement or convenience and practicality.

So i do not care whatsoever cars they choose to buy neither do I criticize them.. as long as I can make any decision solely based on my own taste and opinion on automobiles
I agree. It's all about the hybrids and environmentally conscious vehicles nowadays. Anybody who buys a diesel is a knowing contributor to harming Earth and the future existence of our planet. What they need to do is make hybrid cars a little cooler looking
manuals are so out.. we have stereos, navigation systems, phones, computers, and dvd players that need our attention while driving. You gotta keep your left hand free for those.

I'll give you the RWD, but diesel? come on hydrogen and hybrids are the future.
as long as there is money to be made by the sale of gas, this trend will continue. Why would the big three make cars that are plain cheap to drive? Thats not profitable.
diesels are becomeing more comman these days as is diesel perfomance look at the jeep cherekee with turbo diesel that was shortly produced then was shut down becuase they where too powerful what the hell too powerfull? so what the jeep would get a little sideways and probably get 30 mpg people around here are getting into the diesel scene hot and heavy. I dont think all american vehicles are crappy you watch muscle cars are coming back on the scene such hemi challenger, vettes can still be pretty lively
Your operating under the false assumption that everyone has the same needs and opinions that you do. Your understanding of vehicle dynamics is also appalling. Note for instance that you complain there are too many FWD vehicles and you complain they are prone to oversteer. But FWD cars are inherently prone to understeer, not oversteer. In fact, all vehicles sold for public consumption are engineered to understeer. Oversteer is dangerous. You also equate "fun to drive" with "turbo diesel", which is absurd beyond words.

Educated? You may have to reconsider.
Yay Turbo Diesel, RWD, and Stick!!!!!! Make them cool looking at Americans will buy them.
people dont really have a choice if they are low income and dont have much money and, a car gets you to point a to b and c and back again. so the reason is that they cant afford it or they just dont want to invest TOO much money in cars. cars today are expensive!!! $26,000 some people cant afford it and also maybe cheap on gas since gas prices have increased lately...
because we have crappy wages....
I love my suv's. They guzzle gas like a Road Warrior movie, weigh as much as two cars, and take me anywhere I have the balls to go! But they aren't from America.

Thank you England!
The "crappy cars" are usually cheaper, and people don't know any better.
