What is the difference between a 2 way radio (Walkie Talkie) and a Police Scanner ?

I'm looking into listening in on my local police in my town and I'm thinking of getting a 2 way radio (Walkie Talkie) The radio I want has got a 40 km range, which is a lot....is there a difference between a 2 way radio (walkie talkie) and a police scanner ?

Thank youWhat is the difference between a 2 way radio (Walkie Talkie) and a Police Scanner ?
A scanner will allow you to listen, assuming that it will pick up the correct frequency! A two way radio (such as a walkie talkie) will allow you to broadcast as well as listen. It most likely is going to be illegal to broadcast on a police frequency, so chose the scanner!

A scanner will also go through several channels to listen for activity! What is the difference between a 2 way radio (Walkie Talkie) and a Police Scanner ?
Yes there is a difference between the two. The police scanners are actually a different technology in the means of how they communicate with each other. Walkie talkies or two-ways are a line of sight frequency and the scanners are actually satellite or micro wave frequency.
